HERBSTKONZERT DER REIHE «VIER JAHRESZEITEN» - Schola Cantorum Basiliensis

at Klosterkirche Königsfelden (Aargau, Switzerland)

Seasons of Love: Music from the 14th Century... A program of medieval love poetry. It focuses on the works of the 14th-century composer Guillaume de Machaut, a man who was equal parts composer and poet. Like our name suggests, Parlamento brings two parties into dialogue with each other. Along with the vocal and instrumental Machaut settings in our program, we highlight the Italian composers of the next generation, such as Johannes Ciconia and Anthonello da Caserta, who reinterpreted Machaut's works for their own people at their own time.Today, Parlamento's lute, fiddle, flute and voice combine to express the full spectrum of human love, which transcends nation and time.

Lady Chriemhilt Sings the Nibelungenlied

Lady Chriemhilt's adventures of love, family betrayal, and cunning revenge motivate the entire Nibelungenlied saga, and it is her powerful story that the all-female Ensemble Parlamento presents, through six musical chapters, in a concert program accompanied by historical reconstructions of medieval instruments. Soprano Karin Weston, the voice of Chriemhilt, sings the Nibelungenlied in Middle High German and New High German, using strophes taken directly from the medieval manuscripts. While no written music survives for the Nibelungenlied, we have selected a historical "Dietrich epic" melody, the Jüngeres Hildebrandslied ("Ich will zu Land ausreiten") as material for retelling Chriemhilt's dramatic story.
